Wenger on Emerging Leadership Roles
In Wenger (1998), I recently re-encountered his list of "emerging leadership roles" for communities of practice. I thought it might be useful to BWP leadership discussions!
Emerging Leadership Roles
--The inspirational leadership provided by thought leaders and recognized experts
--The day-to-day leadership provided by those who organize activities
--The classificatory leadership provided by those who collect and organize information in order to document practice.
--The interpersonal leadership provided by those who weave the community's social fabric
--The boundary leadership provided by those who connect the community to other communities
--The institutional leadership provided by those who maintain links with other organizational constituencies, in particular the official hierarchy
--The cutting-edge leadership provided by those who shepherd "out-of-the-box" initiatives. (Wenger, 1998)

So, Pete, are you saying we need to have each of these to complete a team? I can see how several of us fit more than one role in this community. Thanks for the list. It is something to think about in educational leadership in general (which is where I am at with my ISD and a new super coming on board). I have decisions to make over the next 6 months about my role in the ISD, and this is a good way for me to decide my contributions as well as those of others to the team effort.

No, not at all! But an interesting look at new roles gaining recognition and hopefully value (even if they are familiar to many, and many of us multitask them!)....

I'm glad to see new roles being recognized. Some people contribute a lot, but there isn't the vocabulary or definition to explain how. Kat
